At EPOCC we pride ourselves on offering parents the guidance, information, and assessments needed  to make a well informed decision about their child’s special educational programing (IEP). Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the decision making that takes place at their child’s IEP.  Parents should ask questions, take notes, and conduct their own research prior to accepting any offer of service for their child. All are welcome to join us for one of our monthly workshops where we review a variety of special education topics, and answer questions as submitted by parents. You can register for upcoming workshops below, by sending us an email, or calling us at 1 (559) 666-3830.

When a parent disagrees with the school districts assessments, the parent has a right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation at the publics expense. Allow us the opportunity to provide you with an independent opinion (IEE) in order to guide educational decission making for your child. Assessments are conducted utilizing the lastest evaluation tools and guidelines. Please contact us at 1 (559) 666-3830 for a free conslultation.

Parents should familiarize themselves with the 13 handicapping conditions which may qualify their child for special education services and supports. These include:

  • Deafness
  • Deaf-blindess
  • Emotional Disturbance
  • Hearing Impaired
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Multiple Disabilities
  • Orthopedic impairment
  • Other Health Impairment
  • Specific Learning Disability
  • Speech or Language Impairment
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Visual Impairment.

Individuals with exceptional needs can be afforded services from the age of birth to 22 years of age. The criteria for eligibility under anyone of these handicapping conditions is defined in federal and state law. In order for a child to qualify for services, an assessment must be done. The IEP team uses assessment results to help determine whether a child meets the criteria as applicable to any one of the 13 handicapping conditions.

Our group of professionals understands how to evaluate and apply California Education Code criteria in helping the IEP team determine whether a child may need an IEP.

The assessment process can be very daunting and even intimidating to most parents and families. Often disagreements occur between a family and the school district regarding a child’s eligibility for an IEP, or appropriate services.  When this happens, parents have the right to request an IEE (Independent Educational Evaluation) from the school district.  The request for an IEE should be provided to the school district in writing.  Contact us at 1 (559) 666-3830 for assistance with navigating the IEE process.
